In manufacturing, many processes have been around for what seems like ages – welding and metal shearing, for example. Other processes are newer, with advanced technology that continues to evolve. Laser cutting is one of them. You’ve heard the term before, and you are aware of how effective it can be (cuts within 0.005 inch at National Metal Fabricators), but do you know what it is?
The short answer is that yes, it is exactly what it sounds like: a laser that cuts metal.
But when you get down to it, the process is extremely complex. Energy is concentrated in a way that is so refined that it can essentially melt – or even vaporize – metals, leaving behind a surface that is virtually flawless. The beam is so fine that intricate cutting can be accomplished perfectly. When used to turn tiny metal particles into a gas, the same laser cutting equipment can blow it away, as if it were nothing at all, so clean-up is minimal.
Industrial customers often prefer laser cutting because it leaves behind no burs or jagged pieces. Contact us to learn more about our metal cutting options, as well as our massive Cincinnati Laser Cutting Center, capable of both MIG and TIG welding.
